Report on Religious Liberty & Immigration
This report is intended as a practical tool for immigration attorneys, criminal defense lawyers, civil rights advocates, faith-based organizations, and houses of worship.
In the wake of increasingly extreme and illegal immigration policies, faith communities are fighting back to protect migrants. In addition to the power of the pulpit, protest, and the provision of direct services, immigrants and their supporters have increasingly turned to religious freedom claims to protect themselves from immigration policies that violate their faith.
Lawsuits detailed in the report include:
Cases challenging President Trump’s revocation of the “sensitive locations” memo that previously shielded houses of worship from ICE enforcement;
Lawsuits arguing that deportation to a third country prevents immigrants from practicing their religion;
Suits by religious nonprofits defending their right to serve migrants; and
Cases arguing that deportation violates migrants’, their families’, and their faith communities’ religious freedom.
