Screening & Conversation: The Black Religious Liberty Curriculum

  • Union Theological Seminary, Classroom AD205 3041 Broadway New York, NY, 10027 United States (map)

Join LRRP on Wednesday, Feb. 11th, from 4-6pm, for a screening and conversation on the Black Religious Liberty Curriculum in honor of Black History Month. We’ll screen selections from BRLC’s session on religious liberty and segregation, featuring Prof. Brandon Paradise and Dr. Carolyn Dupont in conversation on how racist laws and policies have been justified on religious grounds, how a theological emphasis on personal salvation served to shield the Church from responsibility for systemic racial inequalities, and how legal approaches to religious liberty during Jim Crow failed to protect Black religious freedom.

After the screening, LRRP Director Liz Reiner Platt and Prof. Paradise will discuss how race shapes contemporary debates on religious freedom.

This is a hybrid event geared towards the UTS student body, but it is open to the public. Please RSVP using the form below. UTS affiliates are strongly encouraged to register with their UTS email accounts.
