From large federal contractors to small, church-based clinics, faith-based organizations provide a substantial share of the immigration legal services available in this country, often in places where few other resources exist. In the face of public attacks and even state investigations into such organizations, LRRP is joining a conversation to examine what’s working, what’s threatened, and what’s next. On October 29, LRRP Director Liz Reiner Platt will be on a panel at the inaugural Interfaith Immigration Summit, hosted by the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC). She will be presenting alongside Sister Norma Pimentel, MJ, a TIME 2026 Woman of the Year, who has led Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley since 2004 and made its Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, Texas, a refuge for more than 100,000 migrants. Also on the panel are Rabbi Sarah Bassin, Rabbi in Residence at HIAS, and Rev. Rhina Ramos, United Church of Christ minister leading Ministerio Latino. Liz will discuss how religious liberty claims are helping protect the right of faith communities to worship with and serve migrants. She’ll walk through past and ongoing cases, including claims asserting the religious right to leave food and water in the desert for migrants, provide pastoral care in detention, worship without fear of ICE enforcement, and provide housing to those seeking asylum. Liz will draw on LRRP’s religion and immigration law tracker, report on religious liberty and immigration, and FAQ on RFRA and immigration enforcement, three resources we’ve developed for attorneys and faith communities.
